Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across Maine. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
Maine has about 1.41 million residents spread across a territory nearly as large as the rest of New England combined, and much of that population lives within reach of the coast and the I-95 corridor. For advertisers, the first question is rarely how to compete; it is how to avoid paying for clicks from places your business cannot practically serve.
The state also has the oldest median age in the country, which shapes demand for healthcare, home care, accessibility upgrades and services aimed at older homeowners. At the same time, Southern Maine around Portland keeps attracting younger professionals and remote workers from Boston and beyond.
Tourism is the other big force. Summer visitors flood the coast, Acadia and the lakes region, so restaurants, lodging, boat tours and rental properties live and die by a few busy months, while year-round businesses work around long winters and a short construction season.
I work with Maine businesses remotely rather than from a local storefront.
The point is simple: a search in Portland and a search in Lewiston can deserve different bids, budgets and messages, and the account should be built to reflect that.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
Most underperforming Maine campaigns I audit struggle with some combination of the following.
A contractor advertising in Greater Portland competes with the most active advertisers in the state, especially in roofing, HVAC and remodeling. The same contractor targeting Aroostook County or Down East towns may be one of only a handful of advertisers, but daily search volume can be too small for automated bidding to learn quickly.
A company may technically serve all of Maine while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Maine has one of the sharpest seasonal swings in the country. Lodging, tours and restaurants see most of their searches between June and October, heating and generator searches dominate from late fall through March, and spring “mud season” is when roads, driveways and drainage problems turn into service calls.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Portland”
“dentist in Bangor”
“business attorney Lewiston”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
A closer look at the Maine markets where most local search demand is concentrated.
Greater Portland is Maine’s economic center and its most competitive search market. Population growth in Cumberland and York counties, a strong restaurant scene and steady in-migration from out of state create demand for home services, healthcare, real estate and professional services.
Because many buyers are new to the area, they lean heavily on Google to find providers. Ads that highlight local reviews, clear pricing and quick response times tend to win here, and separating Portland proper from fast-growing towns such as Scarborough, Westbrook and Saco helps keep costs under control.
Bangor serves as the regional hub for a very large rural area, with healthcare, retail and government services drawing customers from hours away. A business here may effectively serve half the state, which makes radius and county targeting decisions especially important.
Search volume is lower than in Portland, so campaigns need to be structured to collect enough data: fewer, broader ad groups, careful use of match types and patience before making big changes based on a handful of clicks.
Lewiston and Auburn form Maine’s second-largest urban area, with a strong manufacturing and healthcare base and more affordable housing than the coast. Many residents commute toward Portland, so searches here often overlap with the southern Maine market.
Budget-conscious buyers are common, which makes offers, financing options and transparent pricing especially effective in ad copy. Including nearby towns like Turner, Poland and Lisbon in a tight service area usually works better than chasing Portland-level competition.
From Brunswick and Camden to Bar Harbor, the coast is shaped by tourism, second homes and marine trades. Many property owners do not live in Maine full-time, which means they search for caretaking, repairs and rentals from Boston, New York or further away.
For these businesses, location targeting should include people searching about the area, not just people physically in it, and campaigns should be timed around the summer season and the spring opening and fall closing of seasonal homes.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside Maine’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Augusta, Waterville, Presque Isle, Ellsworth, Rockland and the Rangeley and Moosehead lake regions.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
Maine campaign plan
Maine is on Eastern Time with a small population spread over a large area. Most demand sits in the south, and seasonal residents and summer tourism change the market from May to October.
Industry strategy
Paid-search demand in Maine follows the local economy: long winters, coastal tourism, an older population and a housing market reshaped by in-migration. Here is how I approach the industries that benefit most.
State efficiency programs have helped make heat pumps one of the fastest-moving home upgrades in Maine, alongside insulation, weatherization and backup generators. Buyers compare installers, rebates and financing carefully before committing.
What I focus on: campaigns built around rebate- and savings-related searches, separate emergency heating repair campaigns for winter, lead forms that qualify home size and current heating source, and tracking that follows the full sales cycle to installation.
Inns, cottages, campgrounds, tour operators and restaurants along the coast and in the lakes region compete for a short, intense season. Many of their customers plan trips months ahead from out of state.
What I focus on: targeting people searching about Maine destinations from major feeder markets, starting campaigns early enough to capture planning searches, scaling budgets up for peak weeks and down in the off-season, and tracking direct bookings instead of clicks.
Maine’s coastline supports boatyards, marinas, marine mechanics, boat storage and waterfront contractors, many serving seasonal owners who are not in the state year-round.
What I focus on: seasonal campaigns for spring launch and fall haul-out, keyword strategies around storage, repair and specific boat types, and location targeting that reaches boat owners where they live during the winter.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
Greater Portland is the most competitive part of Maine, especially for home services, healthcare and real estate. Bangor, Lewiston–Auburn and Augusta have fewer advertisers, and many rural counties have very little competition at all, although their low search volume makes careful campaign structure important.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In Maine I see consistent Google Ads demand from heat pump and heating contractors, roofers, builders and remodelers, home care and healthcare providers, real estate agents, lodging and vacation rentals, tour operators, and marine businesses.
They all benefit from paid search because customers search with a specific need, often during a short window when the decision has to be made.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Portland, Bangor, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:
