Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across Rhode Island. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
Rhode Island is the smallest state in the country, with about 1.11 million residents, and most of them live within a short drive of Providence. For advertisers, that means the whole state is effectively one metro market, but it also overlaps heavily with nearby Massachusetts towns such as Fall River, Attleboro and Seekonk.
The economy combines healthcare, higher education, the defense and marine industries and a strong hospitality sector. Newport and the South County beaches bring in summer visitors and second-home owners, while Providence anchors year-round demand.
Older homes, coastal weather and tight neighborhoods shape demand for roofing, heating, remodeling and property services. Because the state is so small, a single business can often reach almost every household, so precise targeting and strong differentiation matter more than coverage.
I don’t have an office in every Rhode Island city, and I won’t pretend to.
What I bring is a campaign structure that treats Providence, Warwick, Newport and smaller markets as separate decisions, each with its own bids, budgets, location settings and search terms.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
These are the issues I see most often when Rhode Island businesses come to me with an account that is spending money but not producing enough real customers.
In a market this compact, many competitors target the entire state. A business in Providence may compete with nearly every advertiser in its category, plus Massachusetts companies that include Rhode Island in their coverage. Smaller towns in South County or the western part of the state usually see fewer advertisers, but very little search volume on their own.
A company may technically serve all of Rhode Island while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Summer transforms Rhode Island’s coastal communities: Newport, Narragansett and Block Island see heavy demand for lodging, restaurants, boat services and rentals. Winter brings heating, snow and storm-related searches, and coastal storms can trigger sudden demand for roofing and water damage repairs.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Providence”
“dentist in Warwick”
“business attorney Newport”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Each major Rhode Island market has its own competition, customer behavior and seasonality. Here is how I think about four of them.
Providence is the state’s economic and cultural center, with major hospitals, universities and a dense mix of older neighborhoods. Many residents rent, and many speak Spanish or Portuguese at home.
Campaigns here benefit from neighborhood-level relevance, multilingual ads where the business can serve those customers, and mobile-first landing pages. Healthcare, legal, home services and education are among the most competitive categories.
Warwick and Cranston are suburban, family-oriented communities with high homeownership and easy access to the airport and I-95. Home services, remodeling, auto services and healthcare are particularly active here.
Because these communities sit just a few miles from Providence, many advertisers target them together. Separating suburban homeowner campaigns from city campaigns often reveals clear differences in conversion rates and lead quality.
Newport combines a historic tourism economy, luxury second homes and a large naval presence. Hospitality, weddings, charters and property-care businesses depend heavily on the summer season.
Campaigns here should reach visitors and second-home owners searching from out of state, scale budgets ahead of peak season, and use separate year-round campaigns for local residents and the military community.
South Kingstown, Narragansett, Westerly and the beach communities have a strong summer economy and a growing year-round population. Seasonal rentals, restaurants, marine services and contractors serving coastal homes are especially active.
Ad schedules and budgets should follow the season, and coastal homeowners often search for storm preparation, roofing and exterior repairs in spring and fall.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside Rhode Island’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Woonsocket, Pawtucket, Westerly, Bristol and the rural towns of western Rhode Island.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
Rhode Island campaign plan
Rhode Island is small and on Eastern Time, and much of the Providence market extends into southeastern Massachusetts. The coast and Newport add strong summer seasonality.
Industry strategy
Some industries consistently show strong paid-search demand in Rhode Island, shaped by coastal tourism, older housing and a compact metro economy centered on Providence. Here is how I approach the most common ones.
Newport, the coast and Block Island are popular wedding and event destinations, which supports venues, caterers, photographers, florists and rental companies. Many couples plan a year or more ahead from out of state.
What I focus on: reaching people searching about Rhode Island venues from major feeder markets, early-season budgets for planning searches, and tracking inquiries and booked tours rather than clicks.
Narragansett Bay supports boatyards, marinas, marine contractors, charter operators and boat dealers, many serving seasonal customers.
What I focus on: seasonal campaigns for spring launch and fall haul-out, keyword strategies around specific services and boat types, and targeting owners who live in nearby states during the off-season.
Providence’s hospital systems and a dense population support a large number of specialists, dental offices, physical therapists and wellness providers competing for patients across a small area.
What I focus on: service-specific campaigns, multilingual ads where practices serve those communities, call and appointment tracking, and compliance with Google’s healthcare advertising policies.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
Because Rhode Island is so compact, most advertisers target the whole state, which makes Providence-area searches competitive in legal, healthcare and home services. Massachusetts advertisers also bid on Rhode Island searches. Coastal and western towns have fewer advertisers but limited search volume.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In Rhode Island I see consistent Google Ads demand from roofers, HVAC and heating contractors, remodelers, law firms, dental and medical practices, wedding and event businesses, marine services and seasonal rental owners.
They benefit from paid search because buyers search with a specific need, often within a short planning window.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Providence, Warwick, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:
