Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across New York. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
New York has about 20 million residents, but advertising here means planning for two very different states. Roughly half the population lives in New York City and on Long Island, one of the most expensive advertising markets in the world, while Upstate cities such as Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany run on very different costs and customer expectations.
Downstate, almost every high-value category is crowded: legal, healthcare, real estate, home services, education and professional services all compete in auctions that include national brands. Upstate, competition is lighter, but each market is smaller and more seasonal.
The common thread is that location settings decide profitability. A business that serves Brooklyn should not pay for clicks from Albany, and an Upstate contractor should not accidentally compete in Manhattan auctions.
I work with New York businesses remotely rather than from a local storefront.
The point is simple: a search in New York City and a search in Rochester can deserve different bids, budgets and messages, and the account should be built to reflect that.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
Most underperforming New York campaigns I audit struggle with some combination of the following.
A personal injury firm or home-service company bidding in New York City can pay some of the highest costs per click in the country. The same business in Binghamton, Utica or the North Country may pay a fraction as much, but needs a much wider area to generate the same number of leads.
A company may technically serve all of New York while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Upstate New York has long, snowy winters, especially in the lake-effect belt around Buffalo and Syracuse, so snow removal, heating, roofing and ice-dam searches surge from November to March. Summer brings demand in the Hudson Valley, the Finger Lakes, the Adirondacks and the Hamptons, where second homes and tourism drive seasonal spending.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair New York City”
“dentist in Buffalo”
“business attorney Rochester”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
A closer look at the New York markets where most local search demand is concentrated.
New York City is a collection of very different markets: Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island each have their own incomes, languages and buying habits. Most residents rent, rely on transit and search on mobile.
Successful campaigns here usually target by borough or neighborhood, run in multiple languages where the business can support it, and use mobile-first landing pages with click-to-call and online booking. With costs per click this high, conversion tracking and strict negative keywords are essential.
Nassau and Suffolk counties form a large, affluent suburban market with high homeownership, which makes home services, remodeling, pools, landscaping and healthcare some of the most active categories.
Long Island is long and traffic is heavy, so a business based in Nassau may not want leads from the East End. Splitting campaigns by area and by season, especially around the Hamptons and North Fork, keeps spend focused where crews can realistically work.
Buffalo is the anchor of Western New York, with a strong healthcare and manufacturing base and housing that is far more affordable than downstate. Lake-effect snow makes winter a defining season for roofing, snow removal and heating searches.
Costs per click are moderate, but buyers value local reputation. Ads that emphasize years in business, local reviews and fast response tend to outperform generic messaging here.
Rochester and Syracuse are mid-sized markets built on healthcare, universities and advanced manufacturing, with the Finger Lakes adding wine tourism and vacation homes between them.
Campaigns here benefit from separate targeting for each metro and for the surrounding rural counties, and tourism-related businesses should start campaigns early to capture visitors planning summer and fall trips.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside New York’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Albany, Binghamton, Utica, Ithaca, Plattsburgh and the Hudson Valley towns.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
New York campaign plan
New York is on Eastern Time, and New York City is one of the most expensive Google Ads markets in the world. Upstate New York is a different set of markets with much lower costs.
Industry strategy
Paid-search demand in New York follows the local economy: the gap between downstate and Upstate economies, harsh winters and a huge professional services sector. Here is how I approach the industries that benefit most.
New York City and its suburbs host one of the most competitive legal advertising markets in the country. Personal injury, immigration, real estate and family law firms all compete for high-value searches.
What I focus on: tight geographic targeting by borough or county, strict negative keywords to filter free-advice and job searches, call tracking with qualification, and measuring signed cases rather than raw leads.
From city rentals to Long Island and Hudson Valley homes, New York has a large, constant flow of buyers, renters, landlords and property managers. Movers, property managers, inspectors and real estate professionals all depend on search.
What I focus on: neighborhood-level targeting, mobile-first landing pages with fast contact options, separating renter and buyer intent, and tracking qualified inquiries from each area.
Lake-effect snow around Buffalo, Rochester and Syracuse creates intense seasonal demand for snow removal, roof snow and ice-dam removal, roofing repairs and heating services.
What I focus on: weather-responsive budgets, campaigns ready to scale on storm days, call-focused ads for urgent jobs, and separate spring campaigns for roof replacement after winter damage.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
New York City and Long Island are among the most competitive Google Ads markets in the country, with very high costs per click in legal, healthcare, home services and real estate. Upstate markets such as Buffalo, Rochester, Syracuse and Albany are moderately competitive, and rural counties often have few advertisers.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In New York I see consistent Google Ads demand from law firms, healthcare and dental practices, real estate and property services, movers, home improvement contractors, HVAC and roofing companies, snow removal businesses and tourism businesses in the Hudson Valley, Finger Lakes and Adirondacks.
They share a common pattern: urgent or high-value needs, and customers who go to Google first.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating New York City, Buffalo, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:
