Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across New Jersey. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the country, with about 9.55 million residents, and it sits between two of the largest media markets in the United States. North Jersey is part of the New York City market, South Jersey is part of the Philadelphia market, and Central Jersey sits awkwardly between them.
That split matters for advertisers. Customers in Bergen County and Camden County may never shop in the same places, and competitors from New York and Pennsylvania regularly bid on New Jersey searches. A single statewide campaign hides those differences.
High incomes, high property values and a large share of older homes make home improvement, legal, healthcare and financial services some of the most competitive categories in the state, while the Jersey Shore adds a strong summer tourism economy.
This page is not a claim that I run a local office in New Jersey. I work remotely.
What matters is that Newark, Jersey City and the rest of the state are planned as different markets instead of one blended campaign, so you can see what each area actually returns.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
When I review New Jersey accounts, the same handful of problems tends to explain most of the wasted spend.
A contractor bidding in Bergen or Essex County competes with advertisers from New York City, Westchester and the rest of North Jersey, so costs per click can be very high. The same contractor focusing on Cumberland or Salem County in South Jersey will usually see far less competition and lower costs, but also much less volume.
A company may technically serve all of New Jersey while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
At the Jersey Shore, summer drives everything: rentals, restaurants, boat services and beach businesses depend on a short season, while shore homeowners search for repairs and storm preparation in spring and fall. Inland, heating and snow-related searches peak in winter and outdoor projects surge from April onward.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Newark”
“dentist in Jersey City”
“business attorney Toms River”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Four parts of New Jersey that show why one statewide campaign rarely fits every market:
North Jersey, from Newark and Paterson to the Bergen County suburbs, is part of the New York City metro and one of the most competitive search markets in the country. Many advertisers here target the same towns from both sides of the Hudson.
To compete without overspending, campaigns usually need tight town-level targeting, strong reviews and offers that stand out. Many communities are also highly multilingual, so Spanish and other language campaigns can reach customers that English-only ads miss.
Jersey City and Hoboken have become dense, high-rent urban markets filled with young professionals who commute to Manhattan. Most residents rent, search on mobile and expect fast, digital-first service.
That favors businesses such as healthcare practices, fitness studios, movers, cleaners and professional services, and it rewards mobile-first landing pages, online booking and ad schedules built around evening and weekend searches.
Monmouth and Ocean counties, including Toms River, combine suburban family neighborhoods with Jersey Shore communities. Home services, remodeling and real estate are highly active, and many homes still carry repair and resiliency needs from past coastal storms.
Campaigns here should separate year-round local demand from summer tourism demand, and they can often find better costs per lead than in North Jersey while still reaching affluent households.
South Jersey, including Camden, Cherry Hill and Atlantic City, looks toward Philadelphia rather than New York. Many businesses here also serve Pennsylvania customers across the Delaware River.
Advertisers should decide deliberately whether to include Philadelphia-area searches. For some businesses, adding nearby Pennsylvania suburbs adds valuable volume; for licensed trades, it can simply waste budget on customers they are not set up to serve.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside New Jersey’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Vineland, Flemington, Sussex County, Cape May County and the Pinelands communities.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
New Jersey campaign plan
New Jersey is on Eastern Time and is effectively split between the New York and Philadelphia markets. It is dense, expensive and full of advertisers from neighboring states.
Industry strategy
In New Jersey, dense suburbs, high property values and two neighboring big-city markets shape which industries get the most value from paid search. These are the ones I see most often.
New Jersey has a large, older housing stock and high property values, which keeps roofing, siding, windows, basements, kitchens and bathrooms in constant demand. The state also requires home improvement contractors to register, and buyers increasingly look for licensing and reviews before calling.
What I focus on: town-level targeting to keep costs under control, ad copy that shows registration, reviews and warranties, separating repair from full-project campaigns, and tracking booked estimates rather than clicks.
New Jersey has long been a center for pharmaceutical and life sciences companies, which supports contract manufacturers, lab suppliers, regulatory consultants and specialized service providers.
What I focus on: precise B2B keyword research, exclusion of job-seeker and consumer traffic, compliance-aware ad copy, and lead tracking that measures qualified opportunities rather than form submissions alone.
From Long Beach Island to Cape May, shore businesses depend on visitors from New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania and beyond. Rentals, restaurants, charters and attractions compete for a short summer season.
What I focus on: starting campaigns early in the year when families plan summer trips, reaching people searching from feeder markets, scaling budgets for peak weeks, and tracking direct bookings to reduce platform commissions.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
North Jersey is one of the most expensive Google Ads markets in the country because it overlaps with New York City. Central Jersey and the Shore are competitive in home services and real estate, while South Jersey generally offers lower costs per click, influenced more by the Philadelphia market.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In New Jersey I see strong Google Ads demand from home improvement contractors, roofers, HVAC companies, personal injury and family law firms, dentists and medical specialists, real estate agents, movers, shore rental businesses and B2B life sciences suppliers.
These industries share high customer values and buyers who search with clear, specific intent.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Newark, Jersey City, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:
