Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across California. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
California is the most populous state in the country, with about 39.4 million residents, and it contains several metros that are each larger than many states: Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area, San Diego, the Inland Empire and Sacramento. Each is its own advertising market.
The economy is the largest of any state, spanning technology, entertainment, agriculture, healthcare, logistics and tourism. That makes California one of the most competitive and expensive Google Ads markets in the world, especially for legal, home services, healthcare and real estate.
Regulation, high costs and wildfire and earthquake risks also shape demand, from solar and home hardening to specialized insurance and construction services.
You won’t find a fake local address here.
What a California business gets from me is a structure where Los Angeles, San Diego and smaller markets are measured separately, so budget follows the areas that actually produce customers.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
Here is where California advertisers most often lose money, and what usually fixes it.
A home-service company in Los Angeles or the Bay Area competes with hundreds of advertisers and some of the highest costs per click in the country. The same company in the Central Valley or Northern California will usually face fewer competitors and lower costs.
A company may technically serve all of California while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
California’s wildfire season, which peaks in late summer and fall, drives demand for restoration, air quality and home hardening services. Summer heat in inland areas drives AC demand, while winter storms bring roofing and drainage work.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Los Angeles”
“dentist in San Diego”
“business attorney San Jose”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Here is how campaign strategy changes across four important California markets.
Los Angeles County alone has nearly 10 million residents, and the metro includes Orange County. Neighborhoods vary enormously in income, language and housing.
Campaigns should target by neighborhood or city, run multilingual ads where possible, and track conversions carefully given high costs per click.
San Diego combines military bases, biotech, tourism and a large Spanish-speaking population near the border.
Competition is intense, and campaigns benefit from tight geographic targeting and bilingual messaging.
The Bay Area, including San Jose and Silicon Valley, has extremely high incomes and housing costs.
Premium home services, professional services and B2B technology are especially competitive.
Sacramento, Fresno and Bakersfield offer lower costs and fast-growing communities, along with agriculture.
Many customers are price-sensitive, and summer heat drives AC demand.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside California’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Fresno, Bakersfield, Redding, Chico, Santa Barbara and the Inland Empire communities.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
California campaign plan
California is the most expensive Google Ads market in the country for many industries, and it is really several markets sharing one state. A statewide campaign almost always overspends in Los Angeles and the Bay Area and underspends where leads are cheaper.
Industry strategy
Not every industry needs the same Google Ads strategy. In California, technology, entertainment and agriculture, high costs and wildfire risk make these categories especially active.
Solar installers, battery storage and energy-efficiency contractors compete for homeowners.
What I focus on: qualifying leads by home ownership, compliance-aware ad copy, and tracking appointments.
Silicon Valley and Los Angeles support technology companies selling to businesses.
What I focus on: B2B keywords, exclusion of job seekers, and tracking qualified pipeline.
Wildfire risk drives demand for restoration, defensible space, fire-resistant roofing and air purification.
What I focus on: seasonal budgets, trust-building ad copy, and tracking inspections.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
Los Angeles, the Bay Area and San Diego are among the most competitive Google Ads markets in the world, especially for legal, home services and healthcare. Sacramento and the Central Valley are less expensive.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In California I see consistent Google Ads demand from law firms, HVAC and solar contractors, home builders, healthcare practices, technology companies and restoration businesses.
They benefit because their customers search with high intent.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Los Angeles, San Diego, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:

Office & service area
I run Google Ads for businesses in California from my office in Washington, DC. Campaigns are geo-targeted to the cities, ZIP codes and radius you actually serve in California, so local searchers see your ads and out-of-area clicks are excluded. We work over video calls, WhatsApp and email, with the same account access and reporting wherever you are.
