Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across Montana. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
Montana has about 1.14 million residents spread across the fourth-largest state by area, and no city has more than about 120,000 people. Billings, Missoula, Bozeman, Great Falls, Helena and Kalispell each serve wide regions.
Agriculture, ranching, energy, tourism and a growing remote-work population shape the economy. Bozeman, Missoula and the Flathead Valley have seen rapid growth and rising home prices as newcomers arrive from larger states.
For advertisers, competition is generally light, but customers can be hours apart, so realistic service areas and strong local reputation are essential.
You won’t find a fake local address here.
What a Montana business gets from me is a structure where Billings, Missoula and smaller markets are measured separately, so budget follows the areas that actually produce customers.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
Here is where Montana advertisers most often lose money, and what usually fixes it.
A home-service company in Bozeman or the Flathead Valley competes with a growing number of advertisers chasing new residents. The same company in eastern Montana may face almost no competition, but very limited search volume.
A company may technically serve all of Montana while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Montana winters are long and cold, driving heating and snow removal demand, while short summers bring tourism to Glacier and Yellowstone and a compressed construction season.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Billings”
“dentist in Missoula”
“business attorney Bozeman”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Here is how campaign strategy changes across four important Montana markets.
Billings is Montana’s largest city and a regional hub for energy, healthcare and agriculture.
Competition is moderate, and campaigns should cover a realistic service area.
Missoula combines the University of Montana and a strong outdoor recreation culture.
Demand follows the academic calendar, and new residents drive home services.
Bozeman is one of the fastest-growing small cities in the country, near Yellowstone and Big Sky.
Rising home prices and newcomers create strong demand for builders and premium home services.
Kalispell and Whitefish sit near Glacier National Park, with tourism and second homes.
Campaigns should separate tourism from local services and plan for summer peaks.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside Montana’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Great Falls, Helena, Butte, Whitefish, Miles City and Havre.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
Montana campaign plan
Montana is on Mountain Time, with a small population spread across huge distances. Drive time, not city limits, is what decides where a local business can really serve.
Industry strategy
Not every industry needs the same Google Ads strategy. In Montana, agriculture and energy, tourism and rapid growth in western Montana make these categories especially active.
Glacier, Yellowstone and Montana’s rivers attract visitors for fishing, hiking and lodging.
What I focus on: targeting trip planners, seasonal budgets, and direct booking tracking.
Growth in western Montana creates demand for builders and real estate agents.
What I focus on: relocation targeting, and tracking qualified inquiries.
Ranches and farms support equipment dealers and agricultural services.
What I focus on: niche keywords and call tracking.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
Bozeman, Missoula and the Flathead Valley are the most competitive parts of Montana, while eastern Montana has very few advertisers.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In Montana I see consistent Google Ads demand from home builders, HVAC contractors, real estate agents, tourism and outdoor businesses, law firms and agricultural businesses.
They benefit because their customers search with clear needs.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Billings, Missoula, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:

Office & service area
I run Google Ads for businesses in Montana from my office in Washington, DC. Campaigns are geo-targeted to the cities, ZIP codes and radius you actually serve in Montana, so local searchers see your ads and out-of-area clicks are excluded. We work over video calls, WhatsApp and email, with the same account access and reporting wherever you are.
