Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across Alaska. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
Alaska has about 737,000 residents spread across the largest state in the country, and roughly 40% of them live in Anchorage. Many communities are not connected to the road system and rely on air or water transport, which makes service areas fundamentally different from anywhere else.
The economy depends on oil and gas, fishing and seafood processing, tourism, the military and government. Summer tourism, especially cruise visitors in Southeast Alaska, creates a strong seasonal peak.
For advertisers, competition is often light, but search volume is limited and customers can be very far from a business. Clear service areas, logistics and reliability messaging matter a great deal.
This page is not a claim that I run a local office in Alaska. I work remotely.
What matters is that Anchorage, Fairbanks and the rest of the state are planned as different markets instead of one blended campaign, so you can see what each area actually returns.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
When I review Alaska accounts, the same handful of problems tends to explain most of the wasted spend.
A home-service company in Anchorage competes with most of the state’s active advertisers in its category. The same company in rural Alaska may face little competition, but very limited search volume and complex travel logistics.
A company may technically serve all of Alaska while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Alaska’s seasons are extreme: long, dark winters drive heating and snow removal demand, while short summers bring tourism, construction and fishing seasons. Cruise season in Southeast Alaska runs from spring to early fall.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Anchorage”
“dentist in Fairbanks”
“business attorney Juneau”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Four parts of Alaska that show why one statewide campaign rarely fits every market:
Anchorage is Alaska’s economic center, with oil and gas, the military, healthcare and logistics employers.
Most competition is concentrated here, and campaigns should focus on realistic service areas within the Anchorage Bowl and nearby communities.
Fairbanks serves the Interior, with the University of Alaska, military bases and extreme winter temperatures.
Heating and winter services are especially important, and search volume is moderate.
Juneau, the state capital, is accessible only by air or sea, and Southeast Alaska has a large cruise tourism economy.
Tourism businesses should target cruise passengers and visitors planning trips, while local services must account for limited access.
Wasilla and Palmer in the Matanuska-Susitna Valley are among Alaska’s fastest-growing communities.
Many residents commute to Anchorage, and home services and construction are especially active here.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside Alaska’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Kenai, Kodiak, Ketchikan, Sitka, Bethel and Nome.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
Alaska campaign plan
Alaska breaks most of the targeting habits that work in the lower 48. Distances are huge, many communities are not connected by road, and demand swings hard between summer and winter. Radius targeting around a single city often misses where customers really are.
Industry strategy
In Alaska, oil and gas, tourism, fishing and extreme weather shape which industries get the most value from paid search. These are the ones I see most often.
Cruise visitors, fishing lodges, guided tours and wilderness adventures attract travelers from around the world.
What I focus on: targeting trip planners months ahead, seasonal budgets, and tracking direct bookings.
Energy operations support equipment suppliers, logistics firms and industrial services.
What I focus on: technical keywords, exclusion of job seekers, and RFQ tracking.
Long winters create strong demand for heating, fuel delivery and snow removal.
What I focus on: call-focused ads, weather-responsive budgets, and seasonal contracts.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
Anchorage is the most competitive part of Alaska, while most other areas have very few advertisers. Tourism categories become competitive in summer.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In Alaska I see consistent Google Ads demand from heating contractors, snow removal companies, tourism businesses, fishing lodges, law firms, healthcare practices and energy suppliers.
They benefit because their customers search with clear needs.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Anchorage, Fairbanks, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:

Office & service area
I run Google Ads for businesses in Alaska from my office in Washington, DC. Campaigns are geo-targeted to the cities, ZIP codes and radius you actually serve in Alaska, so local searchers see your ads and out-of-area clicks are excluded. We work over video calls, WhatsApp and email, with the same account access and reporting wherever you are.
