Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across Maryland. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
Maryland has about 6.27 million residents, and most of them live in the corridor between Baltimore and Washington, D.C. That corridor contains two different media markets, so businesses in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties compete with Washington-area advertisers, while Baltimore and its suburbs form their own market.
The economy is heavily shaped by federal agencies and contractors, healthcare and research institutions, and the Port of Baltimore. High household incomes in many counties support demand for premium home services, private education, healthcare and professional services.
Beyond the corridor, Maryland includes the Eastern Shore and Ocean City, the rural counties of Southern Maryland, and the mountains of Western Maryland, each with its own pace and competition.
I don’t have an office in every Maryland city, and I won’t pretend to.
What I bring is a campaign structure that treats Baltimore, Rockville, Annapolis and smaller markets as separate decisions, each with its own bids, budgets, location settings and search terms.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
These are the issues I see most often when Maryland businesses come to me with an account that is spending money but not producing enough real customers.
A home-service company in Montgomery County competes with advertisers from across the Washington metro, including Virginia and D.C. businesses, which drives costs up. The same company on the Eastern Shore or in Western Maryland will see far fewer advertisers, but also less search volume and longer travel times.
A company may technically serve all of Maryland while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Maryland’s summers bring heat and humidity, driving AC and pest control searches, while winters bring heating demand and occasional heavy snow. Ocean City and the Eastern Shore see a summer tourism surge, and coastal storms and nor’easters create roofing and flood-related demand.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Baltimore”
“dentist in Rockville”
“business attorney Annapolis”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Each major Maryland market has its own competition, customer behavior and seasonality. Here is how I think about four of them.
Greater Baltimore has roughly 2.8 million residents and an economy anchored by major hospitals and universities, the port and logistics. Neighborhoods range from historic rowhouses in the city to affluent suburbs in Howard and Baltimore counties.
Campaigns should separate the city from the suburbs, and older rowhouse neighborhoods often need specialized roofing, plumbing and masonry services. Healthcare and legal categories are especially competitive here.
Montgomery County, including Rockville, Bethesda and Silver Spring, is one of the wealthiest and most educated counties in the country, closely tied to federal agencies and research institutions.
Competition is intense because Washington-area advertisers target the same households. Premium positioning, strong credentials and clear differentiation often matter more than simply bidding higher.
Annapolis combines state government, the Naval Academy and a strong boating culture, while Anne Arundel County includes fast-growing suburbs and the BWI airport area.
Marine services, waterfront home services and hospitality are especially active, and campaigns should be timed around boating season and local events.
The Eastern Shore, from Salisbury to Ocean City, combines agriculture, healthcare and a major summer beach economy. Many visitors come from Baltimore, Washington and Pennsylvania.
Campaigns should separate tourism demand from local services, start early enough to catch summer planning, and target visitors searching from major nearby metros.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside Maryland’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Frederick, Hagerstown, Cumberland, Salisbury, Waldorf and the Southern Maryland counties.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
Maryland campaign plan
Maryland is on Eastern Time and sits between the Baltimore and Washington, D.C. markets. Customers in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties often search like D.C. suburbs, and competitors from Virginia and D.C. bid there too.
Industry strategy
Some industries consistently show strong paid-search demand in Maryland, shaped by federal employment, high household incomes and proximity to both Baltimore and Washington. Here is how I approach the most common ones.
Maryland’s federal agencies and contractors support a large market for IT services, cybersecurity, engineering, consulting and staffing firms.
What I focus on: precise B2B keywords around capabilities and contract vehicles, exclusion of job-seeker and student traffic, professional ad copy, and tracking qualified meetings.
The Chesapeake Bay supports marinas, boatyards, marine contractors, dock builders and waterfront home services.
What I focus on: seasonal campaigns for spring launch and fall storage, keywords around specific waterfront services, and targeting owners in the Bay communities.
Major hospital systems and research institutions in Baltimore and the D.C. suburbs compete with independent practices, specialists, dental offices and therapists.
What I focus on: service-line campaigns, compliance with Google’s healthcare advertising policies, call and appointment tracking, and location targeting based on where patients actually travel from.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
The Montgomery and Prince George’s County suburbs are among the most competitive areas in Maryland because they overlap with the Washington market. Greater Baltimore is also highly competitive in legal and healthcare. The Eastern Shore and Western Maryland usually have fewer advertisers and lower costs.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In Maryland I see consistent Google Ads demand from HVAC and roofing contractors, remodelers, law firms, healthcare and dental practices, marine businesses, government contractors and IT service providers, and Ocean City tourism businesses.
They benefit from paid search because their buyers search with high intent and a single customer is valuable.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Baltimore, Rockville, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:
