Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across West Virginia. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
West Virginia has about 1.77 million residents and is one of the few states whose population has declined in recent years. It is almost entirely mountainous, and its largest cities, Charleston, Huntington and Morgantown, each have well under 100,000 residents.
The economy has traditionally relied on coal, natural gas and chemicals, while healthcare, education, outdoor tourism and remote workers have become increasingly important. The Eastern Panhandle has grown as part of the Washington, D.C. commuter region.
For advertisers, costs per click are often low, but search volume is limited and customers are spread across winding roads. Local reputation and reviews matter a great deal.
I don’t have an office in every West Virginia city, and I won’t pretend to.
What I bring is a campaign structure that treats Charleston, Morgantown, Huntington and smaller markets as separate decisions, each with its own bids, budgets, location settings and search terms.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
These are the issues I see most often when West Virginia businesses come to me with an account that is spending money but not producing enough real customers.
A contractor in the Eastern Panhandle competes with advertisers from Maryland and Northern Virginia. The same contractor in the southern coalfields may face almost no paid competition, but very limited search volume.
A company may technically serve all of West Virginia while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
West Virginia winters bring snow, ice and heating demand, while spring often brings flooding in river valleys. Fall foliage and summer outdoor recreation, such as whitewater rafting and hiking, drive tourism demand.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Charleston”
“dentist in Morgantown”
“business attorney Huntington”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Each major West Virginia market has its own competition, customer behavior and seasonality. Here is how I think about four of them.
Charleston, the state capital, is a center for government, healthcare and the chemical industry. The surrounding Kanawha Valley includes many smaller communities along the river.
Campaigns should target realistic service areas along the valley, as mountain roads make travel slower than distances suggest.
Morgantown, home to West Virginia University and a major health system, is one of the state’s growing areas.
Student and university-related demand rises and falls with the academic calendar, while healthcare and home services remain steady year-round.
Huntington sits at the meeting point of West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky, and many businesses serve customers in all three states.
Campaigns should decide deliberately whether to include Ohio and Kentucky towns, and should emphasize licensing and service areas clearly.
Martinsburg, Charles Town and Shepherdstown are part of the broader Washington and Baltimore commuter region, with rapid residential growth.
This creates demand for home services, real estate and healthcare, but also competition from advertisers in Maryland and Virginia.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside West Virginia’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Parkersburg, Wheeling, Beckley, Fairmont, Clarksburg and Lewisburg.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
West Virginia campaign plan
West Virginia is on Eastern Time. Its mountainous terrain makes drive time much more important than distance, and several of its markets cross into Ohio, Kentucky, Pennsylvania or Maryland.
Industry strategy
Some industries consistently show strong paid-search demand in West Virginia, shaped by mountain geography, energy industries and growing outdoor tourism. Here is how I approach the most common ones.
The New River Gorge, ski resorts and whitewater rafting attract visitors from across the East Coast.
What I focus on: targeting travelers searching from nearby metros, seasonal budgets, and tracking direct bookings for outfitters and lodging.
Natural gas, coal and chemical operations support equipment suppliers, contractors and industrial service companies.
What I focus on: technical keywords, exclusion of job seekers, targeting around industrial areas, and tracking qualified quote requests.
An older population and large health systems support practices, home care and senior services.
What I focus on: service-specific campaigns, call tracking, and location targeting based on where patients and families actually live.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
Competition in West Virginia is generally lower than in neighboring states. The Eastern Panhandle is the most competitive area because it overlaps with the Washington region, while most other areas have few advertisers.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In West Virginia I see consistent Google Ads demand from HVAC and roofing contractors, healthcare and senior care providers, law firms, outdoor recreation businesses and energy-sector suppliers.
They benefit from paid search because customers search with clear needs.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Charleston, Morgantown, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:

Office & service area
I run Google Ads for businesses in West Virginia from my office in Washington, DC. Campaigns are geo-targeted to the cities, ZIP codes and radius you actually serve in West Virginia, so local searchers see your ads and out-of-area clicks are excluded. We work over video calls, WhatsApp and email, with the same account access and reporting wherever you are.
