Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across Ohio. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
Ohio has about 11.9 million residents and three large metros of similar size, the “three Cs”: Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati, each with roughly 2 million people or more. Dayton, Toledo, Akron and Youngstown add strong regional markets of their own.
Columbus has become the state’s fastest-growing metro, driven by government, Ohio State University, finance, logistics and major new semiconductor and technology investments. Cleveland combines world-class healthcare with manufacturing, while Cincinnati is home to several large consumer brands and financial firms.
Because no single city dominates, a statewide campaign almost always wastes money. Each metro has its own competition, costs per click and customer behavior.
This page is not a claim that I run a local office in Ohio. I work remotely.
What matters is that Columbus, Cleveland and the rest of the state are planned as different markets instead of one blended campaign, so you can see what each area actually returns.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
When I review Ohio accounts, the same handful of problems tends to explain most of the wasted spend.
A home-service company in the Columbus suburbs competes with a fast-growing pool of advertisers, while a Cincinnati company also competes with Kentucky and Indiana businesses that target the same metro. The same company in Appalachian southeast Ohio will see far fewer competitors and much less search volume.
A company may technically serve all of Ohio while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Ohio has cold winters with lake-effect snow in the northeast, driving heating and snow removal demand, severe spring storms that bring flooding and basement problems, and humid summers that drive AC repairs.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Columbus”
“dentist in Cleveland”
“business attorney Cincinnati”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Four parts of Ohio that show why one statewide campaign rarely fits every market:
Columbus has grown rapidly, and suburbs such as Dublin, Westerville, Delaware and New Albany are expanding with new homes and new employers.
Many newcomers rely on search to find providers, so strong reviews and clear service areas matter. Split campaigns by suburb to keep costs per lead under control.
Cleveland is home to major hospital systems and a strong manufacturing base, with older housing in the city and inner-ring suburbs.
Lake-effect snow and older homes drive demand for heating, roofing and basement waterproofing, and healthcare marketing is especially competitive here.
Cincinnati’s metro crosses into Kentucky and Indiana, with major consumer brands, finance and healthcare employers.
Businesses should decide whether to include Northern Kentucky and southeast Indiana, and target suburbs such as Mason and West Chester separately.
Dayton is anchored by Wright-Patterson Air Force Base and aerospace research, while Toledo is a manufacturing and glass industry center on Lake Erie.
Both are mid-sized markets with moderate competition, where local reputation and call-focused campaigns often perform well.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside Ohio’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Akron, Youngstown, Canton, Mansfield, Athens, Lima and Sandusky.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
Ohio campaign plan
Ohio is a single time zone (Eastern), so dayparting is simple. The harder decision is how to split budget between three metros of similar size that behave very differently, plus the border markets that pull in searches from neighboring states.
Industry strategy
In Ohio, three large metros, manufacturing and healthcare employers, and cold winters shape which industries get the most value from paid search. These are the ones I see most often.
Ohio’s manufacturing base supports machine shops, automation firms, industrial distributors and contract manufacturers, and new semiconductor investment near Columbus is adding more suppliers.
What I focus on: capability-based keywords, exclusion of job seekers, and tracking RFQs and qualified meetings.
Older homes, heavy rain and freeze-thaw cycles make basement and foundation repair a large category across Ohio.
What I focus on: seasonal budgets, separate emergency and planned campaigns, and tracking booked inspections.
Large health systems in Cleveland, Columbus and Cincinnati compete with independent practices and specialists.
What I focus on: service-line campaigns, compliance with Google’s healthcare policies, and appointment tracking.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
Columbus, Cleveland and Cincinnati are the most competitive parts of Ohio, with Cincinnati also facing competition from Kentucky and Indiana advertisers. Dayton, Toledo and Akron are moderately competitive, while rural southeast Ohio has fewer advertisers.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In Ohio I see consistent Google Ads demand from HVAC and roofing contractors, basement waterproofing companies, law firms, healthcare practices, home builders and manufacturing suppliers.
They benefit because their customers search with urgent or high-value needs.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Columbus, Cleveland, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:

Office & service area
I run Google Ads for businesses in Ohio from my office in Washington, DC. Campaigns are geo-targeted to the cities, ZIP codes and radius you actually serve in Ohio, so local searchers see your ads and out-of-area clicks are excluded. We work over video calls, WhatsApp and email, with the same account access and reporting wherever you are.
