Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across Michigan. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
Michigan has about 10.13 million residents and two peninsulas that feel like different states. Metro Detroit, with roughly 4.3 million people, is the largest market, followed by Grand Rapids in West Michigan, Lansing, Ann Arbor, Flint and the Tri-Cities. The Upper Peninsula is rural, remote and heavily seasonal.
The automotive industry still shapes the economy, alongside healthcare, universities, furniture and office products in West Michigan, agriculture and a large tourism sector along the Great Lakes.
Long winters and older housing in many cities create steady demand for heating, roofing, basement waterproofing and snow removal, while lake communities see a strong summer season.
This page is not a claim that I run a local office in Michigan. I work remotely.
What matters is that Detroit, Grand Rapids and the rest of the state are planned as different markets instead of one blended campaign, so you can see what each area actually returns.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
When I review Michigan accounts, the same handful of problems tends to explain most of the wasted spend.
A home-service company in Oakland County competes with many active advertisers across Metro Detroit. The same company in the Upper Peninsula may face almost no paid competition, but very limited search volume.
A company may technically serve all of Michigan while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Michigan winters are long and snowy, with lake-effect snow on the west side, driving heating, snow removal and roofing demand. Spring brings flooding and basement problems, while summer brings lake tourism and cottage season in northern Michigan.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Detroit”
“dentist in Grand Rapids”
“business attorney Lansing”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Four parts of Michigan that show why one statewide campaign rarely fits every market:
Metro Detroit spans Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties, with very different neighborhoods and incomes. Oakland County suburbs are affluent, while many Detroit neighborhoods have older homes needing repairs.
Campaigns should split by county or suburb, and automotive suppliers and engineering firms also generate strong B2B demand.
Grand Rapids is one of Michigan’s fastest-growing metros, with healthcare, manufacturing and furniture industries.
Customers value local reputation, and lake-effect snow drives winter demand. Separate campaigns for the city and suburbs such as Kentwood, Wyoming and Grandville usually work best.
Lansing combines state government, Michigan State University and automotive manufacturing, while Ann Arbor is home to the University of Michigan and a strong technology sector.
Both markets follow the academic calendar, and Ann Arbor in particular has high-income households and higher customer values.
Traverse City, Petoskey and the Upper Peninsula depend heavily on summer tourism, cottages and second homes.
Campaigns should target visitors and second-home owners searching from Detroit, Chicago and beyond, with seasonal budgets.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside Michigan’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Flint, Kalamazoo, Saginaw, Muskegon, Marquette and Sault Ste. Marie.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
Michigan campaign plan
Michigan is on Eastern Time, except four Upper Peninsula counties along the Wisconsin border (Gogebic, Iron, Dickinson and Menominee), which use Central Time. Metro Detroit dominates volume, but West Michigan is a strong market in its own right.
Industry strategy
In Michigan, long winters, older housing and the automotive economy shape which industries get the most value from paid search. These are the ones I see most often.
Michigan’s automotive industry supports suppliers, tooling companies, engineering firms and testing labs.
What I focus on: capability-based keywords, exclusion of job seekers, and tracking RFQs and qualified meetings.
Heavy snowmelt, spring rain and older homes make waterproofing and foundation repair high-demand categories.
What I focus on: seasonal budgets, separate emergency and planned campaigns, and tracking booked inspections.
Northern Michigan and the Great Lakes shoreline attract summer visitors and second-home owners.
What I focus on: targeting feeder markets, early-season campaigns, and tracking direct bookings.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
Metro Detroit is the most competitive part of Michigan, followed by Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor. Northern Michigan and the Upper Peninsula usually have few advertisers but limited search volume.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In Michigan I see consistent Google Ads demand from HVAC and roofing contractors, basement waterproofing companies, law firms, healthcare practices, automotive suppliers and lake tourism businesses.
They benefit because their customers search with urgent or high-value needs.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Detroit, Grand Rapids, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:

Office & service area
I run Google Ads for businesses in Michigan from my office in Washington, DC. Campaigns are geo-targeted to the cities, ZIP codes and radius you actually serve in Michigan, so local searchers see your ads and out-of-area clicks are excluded. We work over video calls, WhatsApp and email, with the same account access and reporting wherever you are.
