Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across Illinois. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
Illinois has about 12.72 million residents, and about two-thirds of them live in the Chicago metro, a region of about 9.3 million people that stretches into Indiana and Wisconsin. Downstate, the economy shifts to agriculture, manufacturing, universities and regional cities such as Peoria, Springfield, Champaign and Rockford.
Chicago is one of the largest and most competitive advertising markets in the country, with heavy competition in legal, healthcare, home services and real estate. Downstate markets are far less crowded, but they are smaller and more spread out.
That makes geography the first strategic decision. A business that serves the North Shore should not pay for clicks from Carbondale, and a contractor in Peoria should not accidentally compete in Chicago auctions.
This page is not a claim that I run a local office in Illinois. I work remotely.
What matters is that Chicago, Naperville and the rest of the state are planned as different markets instead of one blended campaign, so you can see what each area actually returns.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
When I review Illinois accounts, the same handful of problems tends to explain most of the wasted spend.
A personal injury firm or home-service company in Chicago can face some of the highest costs per click in the Midwest. The same business in Peoria, Decatur or the Quad Cities will see far fewer advertisers, but needs a wider service area to generate enough leads.
A company may technically serve all of Illinois while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Illinois winters are cold and snowy, driving heating, plumbing and snow removal demand from November through March, and spring brings severe storms, flooding and basement water problems. Summer brings AC demand and outdoor project season.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Chicago”
“dentist in Naperville”
“business attorney Springfield”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Four parts of Illinois that show why one statewide campaign rarely fits every market:
Chicago itself is a collection of very different neighborhoods, from dense lakefront high-rises to bungalow belts and two-flats. Many homes are older and need specialized plumbing, masonry, roofing and electrical work.
Campaigns usually perform best when targeted by neighborhood or ZIP code, with multilingual ads where the business serves Spanish- or Polish-speaking customers. Strict negative keywords and conversion tracking are essential at these costs per click.
The suburbs, from Naperville and Schaumburg to the North Shore and Will County, form a huge market of homeowners with high incomes. Traffic means a business in one suburb may not want leads from another an hour away.
Splitting campaigns by suburban region usually improves cost per lead, and businesses can often find better value in fast-growing outer suburbs than in the most crowded inner areas.
Springfield, Peoria, Bloomington-Normal and Champaign-Urbana anchor Central Illinois, with economies built on government, agriculture, insurance, manufacturing and universities.
Costs per click are moderate and buyers value local reputation. Campaigns should cover realistic service areas around each city rather than the whole region.
Rockford and the Quad Cities on the Mississippi River are manufacturing and logistics centers, with the Quad Cities market extending into Iowa.
Businesses in the Quad Cities should decide whether to include Iowa searches, while Rockford businesses often compete with suburban Chicago and Wisconsin advertisers on the edges of their market.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside Illinois’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Decatur, Carbondale, Quincy, Kankakee, Danville and the Metro East communities near St. Louis.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
Illinois campaign plan
Illinois is one time zone (Central), but Chicagoland and the rest of the state are very different markets. Two major metro areas also cross state lines: Chicago into Indiana and Wisconsin, and St. Louis into the Metro East.
Industry strategy
In Illinois, the size of the Chicago market, cold winters and older housing shape which industries get the most value from paid search. These are the ones I see most often.
Heavy rains, older sewer systems and basements across the Chicago area make waterproofing, sump pumps, flood control and foundation repair high-demand categories.
What I focus on: storm-responsive budgets, separate campaigns for emergency water problems and planned waterproofing, and tracking booked inspections.
Chicago is one of the most competitive legal markets in the country, especially for personal injury, workers’ compensation and family law.
What I focus on: tight geographic targeting, strict negative keywords, call qualification, and measuring signed cases rather than raw leads.
Downstate Illinois supports agricultural equipment dealers, grain and seed businesses, manufacturers and industrial suppliers.
What I focus on: niche B2B keywords, wide but realistic targeting, exclusion of job seekers, and tracking qualified quote requests.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
The Chicago metro is by far the most competitive part of Illinois, with very high costs per click in legal, healthcare and home services. Central Illinois cities are moderately competitive, while southern and rural areas usually have fewer advertisers.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In Illinois I see consistent Google Ads demand from law firms, basement waterproofing and plumbing companies, HVAC and roofing contractors, healthcare and dental practices, real estate businesses and agricultural and manufacturing suppliers.
They benefit because their customers search with urgent or high-value needs.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Chicago, Naperville, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:

Office & service area
I run Google Ads for businesses in Illinois from my office in Washington, DC. Campaigns are geo-targeted to the cities, ZIP codes and radius you actually serve in Illinois, so local searchers see your ads and out-of-area clicks are excluded. We work over video calls, WhatsApp and email, with the same account access and reporting wherever you are.
