Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across Iowa. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
Iowa has about 3.24 million residents, and the Des Moines metro is its largest and fastest-growing market. Cedar Rapids, Iowa City, the Quad Cities, Waterloo, Sioux City and Dubuque each serve their own regions, and much of the state is rural farmland.
Agriculture shapes the economy and the calendar, alongside insurance and financial services in Des Moines, manufacturing and a growing renewable energy sector. Many rural businesses serve customers spread across several counties.
For advertisers, costs per click are generally moderate and competition is lighter than in larger states, but search volume outside the main metros is limited, so campaigns need to be built to learn from fewer conversions.
You won’t find a fake local address here.
What a Iowa business gets from me is a structure where Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and smaller markets are measured separately, so budget follows the areas that actually produce customers.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
Here is where Iowa advertisers most often lose money, and what usually fixes it.
A home-service company in the Des Moines suburbs competes with a growing number of advertisers chasing new residents. The same company in northwest Iowa may face very few competitors, but much smaller search volume.
A company may technically serve all of Iowa while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Iowa has cold, snowy winters, severe spring and summer storms including derechos and hail, and hot summers. Planting and harvest seasons shape demand for agricultural businesses, and storms can create sudden spikes in roofing and tree-service searches.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Des Moines”
“dentist in Cedar Rapids”
“business attorney Davenport”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
Here is how campaign strategy changes across four important Iowa markets.
The Des Moines metro, including West Des Moines, Ankeny, Waukee and Urbandale, has grown rapidly, driven by insurance, financial services and technology employers.
Competition is strongest in home services, healthcare and real estate. Separating fast-growing suburbs from the city core often reveals better-value customers.
Cedar Rapids is a manufacturing and food processing center, while nearby Iowa City is home to the University of Iowa and a major medical center.
Demand in Iowa City follows the academic calendar, while Cedar Rapids has steady industrial and residential demand. Separate campaigns for each city usually work best.
Davenport and Bettendorf are part of the Quad Cities metro shared with Illinois, with manufacturing and logistics along the Mississippi River.
Businesses should decide whether to include Illinois searches, and should emphasize licensing and service areas clearly.
Sioux City sits at the meeting point of Iowa, Nebraska and South Dakota, and many businesses serve all three states.
Campaigns should cover realistic service areas across state lines where licensing allows, with call-focused ads for home and agricultural services.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside Iowa’s largest metro areas, in markets such as Waterloo, Dubuque, Ames, Council Bluffs, Mason City and Ottumwa.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
Iowa campaign plan
Iowa is one time zone (Central), and most of its larger markets sit on or near a state line. Omaha, the Quad Cities and Sioux City all pull customers from neighboring states.
Industry strategy
Not every industry needs the same Google Ads strategy. In Iowa, agriculture, insurance and finance, and severe weather make these categories especially active.
Iowa’s farms support equipment dealers, seed and crop services, grain handling, drainage contractors and agricultural lenders.
What I focus on: niche keywords, seasonal budgets around planting and harvest, wide but realistic targeting, and tracking qualified calls.
Des Moines is a major insurance and financial services center, supporting agencies, advisers and related professional services.
What I focus on: product-specific campaigns, exclusion of job seekers, compliance-aware ad copy, and tracking qualified appointments.
Derechos, hail and severe storms create recurring demand for roofing, siding, tree removal and restoration.
What I focus on: storm-responsive budgets, trust-building ad copy against storm chasers, and tracking booked inspections.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
The Des Moines metro is the most competitive part of Iowa, followed by Cedar Rapids, Iowa City and the Quad Cities. Rural areas usually have few advertisers and low costs per click.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In Iowa I see consistent Google Ads demand from roofing and storm restoration companies, HVAC contractors, agricultural businesses, insurance agencies, law firms, healthcare practices and home builders.
They benefit because their customers search with clear needs.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Des Moines, Cedar Rapids, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:

Office & service area
I run Google Ads for businesses in Iowa from my office in Washington, DC. Campaigns are geo-targeted to the cities, ZIP codes and radius you actually serve in Iowa, so local searchers see your ads and out-of-area clicks are excluded. We work over video calls, WhatsApp and email, with the same account access and reporting wherever you are.
