Case studies
A closer look at three client campaigns: where they started, what I changed, and what the numbers looked like afterwards.
Coach · Online course
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This coach needed to sell an online course and grow his personal brand. I built a conversion-focused funnel and ran strategic ads to it, turning a $2,773.25 investment into $15,267.29 in sales.
Non-profit · Fundraising
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This non-profit was losing money on its fundraising ads when they brought me in. In the first month, $970 in ad spend raised $6,422, and the wider fundraising effort went on to generate more than $600K that year.
High-ticket services
Ad spend
→
Revenue
This business sells high-ticket services and products. I rebuilt the ad strategy around stronger creatives and smarter retargeting, then tightened spend and targeting, turning $2.9K into $20,472.10 in revenue.
Local market
Advertising conditions are not identical across Minnesota. Businesses competing in a major metropolitan area can face a different paid-search environment from companies serving smaller cities, suburban markets, or rural areas. The strategy should reflect those differences rather than treating an entire state as one uniform advertising market.
Minnesota has about 5.83 million residents, and the Minneapolis–St. Paul metro accounts for more than half of them, with roughly 3.7 million people. Outside the Twin Cities, Rochester, Duluth, St. Cloud and Mankato serve large regions.
The Twin Cities are home to a large number of Fortune 500 headquarters, along with healthcare, medical devices and finance. Rochester is dominated by the Mayo Clinic, and Duluth is a port city on Lake Superior.
Harsh winters shape demand across the state, while thousands of lakes support a strong cabin and recreation economy in summer.
I work with Minnesota businesses remotely rather than from a local storefront.
The point is simple: a search in Minneapolis and a search in Rochester can deserve different bids, budgets and messages, and the account should be built to reflect that.
Businesses operating in major metro areas often face greater advertiser density because more companies are competing for the same high-intent searches.
Smaller markets may have different challenges.
Search volume can be lower, service areas can be larger, and campaigns may need to balance efficient geographic coverage with enough search demand to produce useful data.
The correct strategy depends on the market.
That is why statewide Google Ads management should analyze performance geographically instead of assuming every city deserves the same investment.
What gets in the way
Most underperforming Minnesota campaigns I audit struggle with some combination of the following.
A home-service company in the Twin Cities suburbs competes with many active advertisers. The same company in northern Minnesota may face few competitors, but limited search volume.
A company may technically serve all of Minnesota while still having areas where customers are more valuable, easier to reach, or operationally practical.
Campaigns can be segmented around:
Minnesota winters are among the coldest in the country, driving heating, snow removal and ice-dam demand. Spring brings flooding, and summer brings lake and cabin season, especially up north.
“emergency plumber near me”
“roof repair Minneapolis”
“dentist in St. Paul”
“business attorney Rochester”
often reveal significantly stronger commercial intent than broad informational queries.
A local Google Ads campaign should be built around that distinction.
City by city
A closer look at the Minnesota markets where most local search demand is concentrated.
Minneapolis is a dense urban market with many older homes and a large professional workforce.
Campaigns should target by neighborhood or suburb, and older homes need specialized heating, plumbing and roofing services.
St. Paul, the state capital, and suburbs such as Woodbury and Maplewood form a distinct part of the metro.
Separating the east and west metros often improves cost per lead because customers rarely cross the whole region for local services.
Rochester is dominated by the Mayo Clinic, which attracts patients from around the world.
That creates demand for lodging, transportation and patient services, along with steady local home services.
Duluth and the North Shore combine a port economy with heavy tourism and cabin ownership.
Campaigns should target visitors and cabin owners searching from the Twin Cities, with seasonal budgets.
I can also help businesses targeting customers outside Minnesota’s largest metro areas, in markets such as St. Cloud, Mankato, Moorhead, Bemidji, Brainerd and Winona.
A smaller market does not automatically mean an easier campaign.
Lower search volume, larger service territories, and fewer daily conversion opportunities can make good targeting and measurement even more important.
Minnesota campaign plan
Minnesota is on Central Time, and the Twin Cities hold most of the population. Long winters and border markets with Wisconsin and North Dakota shape how I structure accounts.
Industry strategy
Paid-search demand in Minnesota follows the local economy: harsh winters, corporate headquarters and a strong lake and cabin economy. Here is how I approach the industries that benefit most.
Minnesota’s medical device industry supports suppliers, contract manufacturers and consultants.
What I focus on: precise B2B keywords, exclusion of job seekers, and tracking qualified leads.
Lake cabins create demand for docks, septic, construction, property management and rentals.
What I focus on: targeting cabin owners in the Twin Cities, seasonal campaigns, and tracking inquiries.
Heavy snow drives demand for snow removal, ice-dam removal and roof snow clearing.
What I focus on: weather-responsive budgets, call-focused ads, and seasonal contract campaigns.

Questions
Competition varies significantly by industry and location.
The Twin Cities metro is the most competitive part of Minnesota. Rochester and Duluth are moderately competitive, while rural areas usually have few advertisers.
A statewide average can hide major differences between markets.
That is why I prefer evaluating the actual keywords, cities, services, and competitors relevant to your business.
In Minnesota I see consistent Google Ads demand from HVAC and roofing contractors, snow removal companies, law firms, healthcare practices, medical device suppliers and lake property businesses.
They benefit because their customers search with urgent needs.
That depends on where customers are located and where your business can realistically serve them.
For some businesses, statewide targeting makes sense.
For others, separating Minneapolis, St. Paul, and other priority areas provides better budget control.
They can be, especially when a larger number of advertisers compete for the same commercial searches.
However, cost per click alone does not determine profitability.
A more expensive market can still make sense if:
Yes.
Smaller markets can still contain strong commercial search demand.
The campaign may simply need a different strategy around:

Office & service area
I run Google Ads for businesses in Minnesota from my office in Washington, DC. Campaigns are geo-targeted to the cities, ZIP codes and radius you actually serve in Minnesota, so local searchers see your ads and out-of-area clicks are excluded. We work over video calls, WhatsApp and email, with the same account access and reporting wherever you are.
