Search intent

How Homeowners Search for Roofing Companies on Google

Not every search deserves the same bid. I separate Roofing Companies searches by intent, because each type converts differently, costs differently and needs a different ad and landing page.

01

Urgent & Ready to Book

People who need help now. These usually deserve the highest bids, call-focused ads and ad schedules that match when you can actually answer the phone.

“roof leak repair”, “emergency roof repair”, “storm damage roof”, “roof tarp service” and “hail damage roof inspection”. These spike within hours of a storm in the affected ZIP codes, so budgets must shift quickly to where the damage actually happened.

02

Specific Service Searches

Searches for one service or treatment. They are usually the best mix of volume, intent and customer value, so each one gets its own ad group and landing page.

“roof replacement”, “metal roofing contractor”, “shingle roof installation”, “tile roof repair”, “flat roof repair” and “gutter installation”. Replacements are the revenue drivers, so they get dedicated campaigns, financing messaging and pages with project photos.

03

Price & Research Searches

People comparing costs and options. Valuable when your ads and pages answer their questions clearly, wasteful when they lead to a generic homepage.

“roof replacement cost”, “metal roof vs shingles”, “does insurance cover roof replacement” and “roof financing”. Research buyers convert when the page offers a free inspection, explains insurance help and shows financing.

04

Comparison & Brand Searches

Searches for reviews, “best” lists and specific providers, including your own business name, which competitors may already be bidding on.

“best roofers near me”, “roofing company reviews”, manufacturer certifications such as GAF or Owens Corning, and your own company name, which out-of-town contractors may target after storms.

Costs & benchmarks

What Google Ads Costs for Roofing Companies

Clicks in some industries look expensive until you compare them with what a new customer is worth. These are the numbers I look at before recommending a budget.

Typical cost per click

About $8.33
WordStream’s 2026 search benchmarks put the median for Home & Home Improvement advertisers at $8.33 per click. Roofing terms after hail or hurricanes can cost several times more for a few weeks.

Typical cost per lead

About $91
The 2026 home-services median cost per lead is $90.92. Roof replacement leads often cost more, but a single signed job can cover months of spend.

Value of one new customer

$10,000–$30,000+
A full roof replacement is usually a five-figure job, while repairs are a few hundred to a few thousand dollars. Bids should follow the value of the job type.

How I Work Out a Profitable Cost per Click

The real question is not whether clicks are expensive. It is how much you can afford to pay for a click and still make money. I start with three numbers: what a new customer is worth, how many leads turn into customers, and how many clicks turn into leads. Multiply them together and you get a break-even cost per click, which tells us which keywords are worth buying and which ones are not.

Illustrative example: if an average signed roof is worth $12,000, 25% of inspections turn into signed jobs, and 8% of clicks book an inspection, each click is worth $12,000 × 0.25 × 0.08 = $240 at break-even. That is why roofing can profit even at high click costs, as long as inspections are tracked to signed contracts.

Campaign structure

The Google Ads Structure I Build for Roofing Companies

A good account is built around how your homeowners search and how your business makes money, not around a one-size-fits-all template.

01

Search Campaigns Built Around Services

Each high-value service gets its own campaign or ad group, its own ads and its own landing page, so budget follows the services that make you money and you can see exactly what each one costs.

Separate campaigns for roof repair and leaks, storm and hail damage, full replacement, material-specific searches (metal, tile, flat), gutters and commercial roofing, with storm campaigns ready to scale by ZIP code.

02

Local Services Ads Where You Qualify

For many home-service and professional categories, Google shows Local Services Ads with a Google Guaranteed or Google Screened badge above regular ads, charged per lead instead of per click. When you qualify, I plan them alongside Search rather than instead of it.

Roofing is a Local Services Ads category with the Google Guaranteed badge, charged per lead. I use LSAs for broad “roofer near me” demand and Search for replacement, material and storm campaigns where messaging and targeting control matter.

03

Call-First Ads & Map Visibility

For businesses where customers prefer to phone, I prioritize call assets, call-only formats where they fit, location assets and accurate business hours, so ads only push calls when someone can answer.

04

Remarketing & Automated Campaigns, Used Carefully

Remarketing and Performance Max can help, but only once conversion tracking is reliable and the basics are profitable. Otherwise they spend quickly on low-quality traffic.

Keywords

Keywords I Target for Roofing Companies, and the Ones I Block

Choosing what not to pay for is just as important as choosing what to bid on. Negative keywords are added on day one, not after the budget is gone.

High-Intent Keywords I Prioritize

Searches that show a real need, a specific service and a location are usually where profitable campaigns start.

  • roofing company + city
  • roof replacement / new roof
  • roof repair / roof leak repair
  • storm and hail damage roof
  • roof inspection
  • metal roofing contractor
  • tile and flat roof repair
  • commercial roofing
  • gutter installation
  • roof financing

Negative Keywords I Add From Day One

Job seekers, DIY researchers, students and people looking for free help can drain a budget without producing a single customer.

  • roofer jobs, salary, hiring
  • roofing supplies, shingles for sale
  • DIY, how to patch a roof
  • roofing nails, tools and calculators
  • roof coating products
  • car and RV roof repair
  • roofing software and CRM
  • insurance adjuster jobs
  • dog house and shed roofs
  • free roof programs you do not offer

Ads & landing pages

Ad Copy and Landing Pages That Convert for Roofing Companies

Roofing leads are expensive and the jobs are large, so the ad and landing page need to separate homeowners ready for an inspection from people looking for a quick patch quote.

Ad messages that work

  • Free inspection: a no-cost inspection offer is the standard entry point; I pair it with storm-damage and insurance-claim messaging after hail or wind events.
  • Replacement versus repair: separate ads, because replacement buyers compare financing and warranties while repair buyers want speed.
  • Materials and warranties: naming shingle brands and manufacturer certifications builds credibility.
  • Local proof: “500+ Roofs in [City]” style claims, only when true.

What the landing page needs

  • A short inspection request form plus a phone number.
  • Before-and-after photos from real local jobs.
  • Insurance-claim help explained clearly, since many homeowners do not know how it works.
  • License, insurance and warranty details visible without scrolling far.

Common mistakes

Google Ads Mistakes I See Roofing Companies Make Most Often

When I audit Roofing Companies accounts, the same few problems usually explain most of the wasted spend.

  • Static budgets during storm season. Demand shifts to specific ZIP codes within hours of hail or wind.
  • Sending replacement searchers to a repair page. A $15,000 decision needs photos, warranties and financing.
  • Paying for DIY and supply searches. “Shingles for sale” and “how to patch a roof” rarely become customers.
  • Not tracking inspections to signed jobs. Cheap inspection leads that never sign mislead the bidding.
  • Hiding insurance help. Storm-damage buyers want to know you handle claims.
  • Too wide a service area. Long drives for inspections destroy margins.

Policies & trust

Compliance, Policies & Trust Signals for Roofing Companies

Some industries face Google Ads policy restrictions, advertiser verification or professional advertising rules. Getting this wrong can mean disapproved ads, limited reach or a suspended account.

Rules That Affect Your Ads

Roofing is not restricted in Google Ads, but storm-related ads must not make misleading insurance or “free roof” claims, and several states regulate contractors who offer to handle insurance claims or waive deductibles. Licensing requirements vary by state, and Local Services Ads verify license and insurance.

Trust Signals Homeowners Look For

License and insurance, local address and years in business, manufacturer certifications, workmanship and material warranties, real project photos, reviews, insurance-claim experience and financing. These separate you from out-of-town storm chasers.

Seasonality

When Homeowners Search, and How Budgets Should Follow

Demand for most industries rises and falls through the year. A flat monthly budget usually overspends in quiet months and runs out when demand is highest.

Spring and early summer bring hail season in the Plains and Midwest, hurricane season runs June to November on the Gulf and Atlantic coasts, and fall is a strong replacement season before winter. Snow and ice dams drive winter leaks in the North. I prepare storm campaigns in advance and scale them by ZIP code when weather hits.

Measurement

What I Track for Roofing Companies, Beyond Clicks

Clicks and impressions do not pay the bills. I set up tracking so you can see which campaigns and keywords produce real homeowners.

01

Qualified Calls

Calls from ads are tracked by duration and source, so short and accidental calls are not counted as leads.

02

Forms & Bookings

Form submissions and online bookings are tracked as conversions, separated from page views and button clicks.

03

Real Business Outcomes

Where possible, leads are matched to jobs, appointments or sales, so bidding can learn from the leads that actually become customers.

Inspections booked, estimates sent and signed contracts with their value. Leads are synced from roofing CRMs such as JobNimbus, AccuLynx or ServiceTitan where possible, so Google Ads optimizes toward signed jobs rather than inspection requests.

Questions

Google Ads for Roofing Companies: FAQs

WordStream’s 2026 home-services benchmarks show a median of about $8.33 per click and $90.92 per lead; roofing terms often run higher after storms. Many roofing companies start at $3,000–$10,000 a month depending on market and season.

Usually yes, because a single replacement can pay for months of ads. It fails when inspections are not followed up or campaigns attract only small repairs.

Roof replacement, roof repair, storm and hail damage, roof inspection, material-specific searches and commercial roofing in your service area. Block jobs, supplies and DIY searches.

Both. LSAs capture broad “roofer near me” demand per lead, while Search lets you run storm, replacement and material campaigns with your own pages.

Repair and storm leads can start within days; replacement campaigns need 4–8 weeks to learn and are best judged on signed jobs over 2–3 months.

Roofing is not restricted, but insurance and “free roof” claims must be accurate, and some states regulate insurance-related contractor advertising.

Inspections, estimates and signed contracts are tracked, ideally synced from your roofing CRM as offline conversions.

Yes. Each territory gets its own targeting, budget and pages, with storm campaigns that can scale in specific ZIP codes.
